Different characters have different requirements. For example, beat Classic or Adventure mode with ten different characters to unlock Mr. Game & Watch. I managed to get him by spamming Pikachu through the levels!
To unlock all characters in Melee, you can either play through specific challenges or rack up matches in Versus mode. For instance, to get Mewtwo, log 20 hours in Versus matches! No shortcuts here – just tons of gameplay!
