From my own endless hours in Turf War, I'd say keep playing regular battles to earn those ability chunks. Use them wisely to add abilities!

You can unlock more abilities on items in Splatoon 2 by earning experience points through battles and leveling up your gear. Once you earn enough XP, your gear will unlock its secondary ability slots automatically. Happy inking!
