For Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, beat Classic Mode with any character or play 10 matches.
In the original Super Smash Bros. for N64, you just need to beat the 1P Game (Classic Mode) on Normal difficulty or higher with 3 lives or fewer continues.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Ness is unlocked by finding and defeating him in World of Light, or through Classic Mode routes, or after playing a certain number of VS matches.
