You've got a few ways to unlock characters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. The quickest way is playing through the World of Light adventure mode. Each new fighter you find joins your roster! Alternatively, you can play regular matches; every 10 minutes or so, a new challenger appears. Beat them, and they're all yours!

Just play a ton of matches! After every few games, you'll get a new challenger. Beat them, and you unlock the character.
