In Super Mario 64, go to the main hall and look up into the light on the floor. You'll be in the Wing Cap course where you can hit the red-switch in the center tower to unlock the red boxes. Easy-peasy!

You gotta grab that Wing Cap! Head to the main hall and look up into the light from the sun mural while standing on the sun emblem. Fly across the stage to hit that switch and bam, red boxes unlocked!

If you want those red boxes, you need to unlock the Wing Cap first. Go to the main hall, stand on the sun emblem, and look up at the light. Then, fly to the red switch to activate it.
