To unlock red boxes in Super Mario 64 DS, you'll need to hit the red ! Switch in the Tower of the Wing Cap course. Just collect 10 Power Stars to unlock the cannon in the main hall, shoot up to the Sun, and then activate it in the special level.
You need 10 stars, then trigger the light beam in the castle's main hall. Jump in, complete the Wing Cap course, and punch the red switch.
