How to unlock red cap in Super Mario 64?
You need to unlock the Red Cap by defeating the Big Boo in the castle's courtyard and then entering Big Boo's Haunt. Climb to the top of the mansion and defeat the Big Boo there, which will reveal a cage leading to the Big Boo's Balcony star. This unlocks the Red Cap button in the castle lobby!

To unlock the Red Cap, enter the castle, go to the first floor, and stand on the star-shaped rug. Look into the sunbeam to be transported to the Tower of the Wing Cap course. Hit the Red Switch there, and voila, you now have the Red Cap!
I've been playing this game since it came out! To get the red cap, just head to the main lobby of the castle and look up into the sunray on the floor. It'll take you to a level with a red switch. Hit it and you're good to go!
Just look into the sunbeam in the castle's main hall and enter the secret level to hit the Red Switch. Easy peasy!
