Seriously, just spam plorts at those statues in the Ancient Ruins until something works. Then, hop into the portal. Done.
You gotta solve some plort puzzles in the Ancient Ruins to open a portal to the Glass Desert. It's a fun challenge!
In my experience, unlocking the Glass Desert means having to deal with the Ancient Ruins first. You need to find all the right slime statues and feed them the correct plorts. Once you do that, a portal opens up to the Glass Desert.
