To upgrade in Splatoon 2, you need to level up your character and increase your rank in multiplayer battles. Win Turf Wars, Ranked Battles, and Salmon Run to earn experience points and Cash. Use the Cash to buy better weapons and gear from the shops in Inkopolis Square!
Level up by playing matches and then spend your Cash on upgrades. Simple as that!
Just play a lot. Seriously, there's no shortcut!
