You press L1 to grab the bat, then hit Square for a normal attack or Triangle for a heavy attack. Now go knock some skulls!
From personal experience, make sure to grab the bat by pressing L1 and then go wild with Square for quick hits and Triangle for power slams.
Just pick it up by pressing L1 and start whacking away with Square and Triangle. Simple as that!
