In Street Fighter III: New Generation, you can use Akuma by holding down the start button and then moving the cursor to Ryu, Ken, or Sean. Then, press any punch or kick button to select him!
Back in my arcade days, we would hold the start button, navigate to Ryu, Ken, or Sean, and then press any punch or kick to play as Akuma. Worked every time!
