Firsthand experience here: Get yourself an OTG cable if you don't want to deal with Bluetooth. Plug your Xbox controller into the OTG cable, then plug the cable into your phone. Works like a charm for me!
Controller support for PUBG Mobile is kinda iffy. Don't expect it to work perfectly with all features – touch controls are still king.
I've tried using an Xbox controller and had to use a 3rd party app like Octopus to map the controls since the game doesn't natively support it well.
