Select your gunner position, aim, and shoot鈥攊t鈥檚 like first-person shooter mode but you're on a plane/tank. Also, make sure to hit the enemy, not your allies!
Hop into gunner mode (it's F6 on PC) and start blasting away at enemy planes and ground units. Just don't forget to upgrade your crews, or your gunners might have the aiming skills of stormtroopers.
Gunners are basically mini-snipers on your vehicle. Switch to them with F6 on a keyboard, and increase their accuracy with skill upgrades. Easy peasy!
