Before starting a mission, make sure to equip items in your bag. Mid-battle, use the D-pad to choose and use them. Simple!
What you need to do is equip items before heading to battle through the menu. Then press the D-pad during a fight. Done and done!
Just remember to stock up on items before a fight. Once you're battling, press the D-pad to use them. It's all about preparation!
