Honestly, just upgrade whatever you have ingots for. It's all helpful eventually.
Boost your barn capacity, crop growth, and factory production with research upgrades in the Lab. Tap the Lab, select an upgrade, and use ingots to research. Easy peasy!
Been playing for years - go to the Lab, pick what you wanna upgrade (barn space is a good start), and use ingots. They'll build up, trust me.
