Honestly, I hardly ever use the shield. I find it more effective to just dodge and weave. Shields slow you down, and if you're quick, you don't need one. Plus, dodging at the last second gives you a cool slow-mo effect that makes you feel like a hero out of an action movie. Who needs a shield when you've got style and speed?
Don't sleep on the crafting system! Besides just using the shield with the right click, you can upgrade and craft better shields at your base. This makes a HUGE difference in how much damage you can block. So, when you're not adventuring, spend some time upgrading your gear, including your shield, to make yourself nearly unstoppable.
