When you see the shield power-up, swipe towards it to pick it up. It activates on its own and protects you from obstacles for a few seconds.

Just collect it and let the magic happen by itself. No need to tap or swipe any extra buttons!
Just grab the shield power-up during your run and it will activate automatically, giving you some invincibility for a short time. Easy peasy!
From my experience, the shield power-up kicks in right after you grab it. Keep an eye out for it late-game when things get crazy!
