You can also stream MP4 files to your PS3 using a media server like Plex or Universal Media Server. Just set up the server on your computer, and your PS3 should detect it under the Video section.
I do this all the time! Plug your USB with the MP4 into your PS3, go to the Video menu, hit Triangle on the USB and select 'Display All.' Then you can play your MP4s directly.
Actually, just use a USB stick. No need for fancy stuff.
