Splatoon 2 doesn't have a built-in AFK message feature, but you can let your teammates know you'll be away by setting a custom message in your profile or using a voice chat app.

When I go AFK in Splatoon 2, I update my status in the Switch profile. Just a quick "BRB, squid stuff!" works wonders!

Just tell your friends on Discord or whatever app you're using for voice chat that you'll be AFK. No in-game feature for it!
