Press 'M' to open your map and then use the scroll wheel on your mouse to zoom out. Easy peasy!

For controllers, try pressing the right stick or L3 button to toggle zoom levels on the map.

You don't really need to zoom out, everything important is always big and in your face!

From personal experience, I found out you can also sometimes pinch zoom on touchpads if you're playing on a laptop.
