Just got into War Thunder and found that spotting is mostly about having a good vantage point. High ground gives you the best chance to see enemies first!
A lot of it depends on your vehicle's optics and the environment. Forests and urban areas can hide enemies until they're practically on top of you!
Hot take: Vision is all about moving slowly and using cover. If you sprint around, you're practically begging to get spotted.
