Nope, they're not connected. GT was an original anime-only series, while Super was based on a manga written by Akira Toriyama.
Super totally ignores GT. It's like GT never happened because it doesn't follow the same storyline as Super.
I've watched them all: GT and Super are like alternate timelines. If you love Dragon Ball, you'll enjoy both, but don't expect them to link up.
