Nope, they're not the same! Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009) start similarly but diverge because the first one went its own way after catching up to the manga. Brotherhood sticks closer to the manga's original story. Both are awesome in their own right!

Having watched both, I can say they each bring something unique to the table. The original has a darker tone with a different ending, while Brotherhood sticks to Hiromu Arakawa's original vision from the manga. Both are epic adventures though!
