From what I remember in the episodes, Kawaki does appear to be a bit older than Boruto, maybe by a year or two. It adds an interesting twist to their interactions.

Yep, Kawaki is slightly older than Boruto. Boruto was born in the 700th episode of Naruto Shippuden, while Kawaki's age is revealed to be around the same, but just a bit older.
