Yeah, unfortunately, the PS3 can't play PS1 games from different regions. Guess they want us to have multiple consoles!

Yes, the PS3 is region locked for PS1 games. So if you have a collection of games from different regions, you'll need the corresponding regional PS3 to play them.

I've tried it myself, and sadly, the PS3 won't play PS1 games from other regions. Got my hopes up for nothing!
