Splatoon wasn't the last game Iwata worked on, but it was one of the last projects he was involved with during his time at Nintendo. He passed away in July 2015, shortly after Splatoon's release.

I remember that Splatoon released in May 2015 with Iwata's involvement, but it wasn't his final project. As a huge fan, I can tell you, Nintendo still had other games in the works after Splatoon that he had touched!
