My grandad’s got some of the first Hot Wheels that came out, and they're in boxes, not those plastic bubbles we see now. So, definitely not all were in blister packs.

Nope, not all older Hot Wheels were sold in blister packs! Back in the day, some were sold in boxes, especially the ones that came out when Hot Wheels first hit the scene. It's mostly the vintage collections and limited editions that got the box treatment. Blister packs became more common as they figured out it was a great way to show off the car and keep it safe at the same time.

Actually, it was the blister pack that made Hot Wheels iconic. The clear bubble and card backing is a staple, especially for collectors looking to keep them mint. So, while not EVERY single one was sold this way, it's pretty much what put them on the map.
