Each research in XCOM 2 either provides new tech or improves your existing gear. If you want to be super effective, research those alien autopsies for bonus perks.
I always start with Modular Weapons and Resistance Comms. Those let me kit out my squad and stay in touch with the resistance cells to expand my control.
