Simply put, you need PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer in Fortnite. That's basically it.
You don't need PlayStation Plus specifically for Fortnite as it's free to play online on PlayStation. But sometimes they have exclusive skins and packs, so it's worth checking out.
Had PS Plus last year and it got me some cool Fortnite skins and items. Worth it if you're a collector!
