Season 2 (Tokyo Ghoul 鈭欰) took some liberties and diverged from the manga. Season 3 (Tokyo Ghoul:re), however, sticks closer to the manga and jumps ahead two years. Kaneki has lost his memory and goes by Haise Sasaki; he's now leading a team of CCG investigators. Buckle up for another wild ride!
To put it simply, Season 2 was mostly original content not in the manga, while Season 3 picked back up with the manga storyline. Our boy Kaneki gets a new identity as Haise Sasaki and starts working for the 'enemy'鈥攖he CCG!
S2? Anime-only plot twists. S3? Back to the manga, time-skip, amnesia, and Kaneki's new life as 'Haise Sasaki'.
