Honestly, it's a bit of a toss-up, but if I had to pick one, I'd say Dogmeat. Why? Because not only is he an adorable German Shepherd, but he also doesn't judge you or sass you for your choices. Plus, he can fetch items and help in combat without making snarky comments.

Dogmeat is cool and all, but Codsworth is where it's at. Your personal pre-war robot butler slicing and dicing enemies with a buzzsaw? Yes please. Plus, he can carry your stuff and is surprisingly great with a flamethrower.

I gotta disagree with everyone here; it's all about that Lone Wanderer perk. Traveling solo in Fallout 4 means more carry weight and less hassle. Companions are great for a bit, but give me that sweet, sweet solitude (and extra damage resistance) any day.

Piper. No question. She's got spunk, great dialogue, and adding her to your travels means you're never without a good story. Plus, her perk is super useful for getting extra XP in conversations and discovering new locations.

Nick Valentine is hands-down the best companion in Fallout 4. Not only does he have a gripping backstory, but his hacking skills are invaluable. Plus, his detective skills come in handy more than you'd think. And who doesn't love a synth with a heart of gold?
