In Meiosis 1, the chromosomes condense, pair up, and then split into two cells. In Meiosis 2, those two cells split again, but this time each cell gets a single copy of each chromosome.

Short version: Meiosis 1 = divide pairs of chromosomes; Meiosis 2 = divide single chromosomes.

Meiosis 1 separates homologous chromosomes, while Meiosis 2 separates sister chromatids. Think of Meiosis 1 as a 'genetic shuffling' stage.

Meiosis 1 is more about reducing chromosome number, while Meiosis 2 is about making sure each cell gets one copy of each chromosome. First-hand, it's fascinating to see this under a microscope!
