The Legend of Zelda is inspired by creator Shigeru Miyamoto's childhood adventures exploring the forests, lakes, and caves in his hometown of Sonobe, Japan.
It's kinda like if you threw Tolkien's Middle-earth, Arthurian legend, and Japanese mythology into a blender, and out came Hyrule.
To keep it simple: childhood exploration + fantasy lore = The Legend of Zelda.
