The closest thing to a story is the 'Subspace Emissary' mode in Super Smash Bros Brawl, where characters team up to battle an ancient evil called the Subspace Army.
In Smash Ultimate, there's the 'World of Light' mode where nearly all characters are turned into spirits by a being named Galeem, and you have to rescue them.
Who needs a story when you've got Kirby clobbering Pikachu, right?
Honestly, there's not much of a coherent storyline through the series鈥攊t鈥檚 all about the awesome battles and unlocking characters!
