Only the original 20GB, 60GB, and some 80GB models of the PS3 are fully backwards compatible with PS2 games. They have the hardware-based emulation that makes them special.

The 60GB launch models are the best bet if you want full PS2 compatibility. I still have one, and it runs like a champ!

If you鈥檙e looking for backwards compatibility, avoid the Slim and Super Slim models. They don't support PS2 games.
