It's basically 'Journey to the West' meets 'Karate Kid' with a dash of 'Looney Tunes' thrown in for good measure!

Akira Toriyama has mentioned that Dragon Ball was inspired by the classic Chinese novel 'Journey to the West' and martial arts movies, especially Bruce Lee flicks.

Toriyama took a lot of his inspiration from 'Journey to the West', a famous Chinese novel, and he blended it with his love for martial arts movies, particularly those with Bruce Lee. You can see the influence in everything from Goku's monkey tail to his martial arts prowess!

Dragon Ball? Simple. 'Journey to the West' and Bruce Lee films. That's it.

As someone who grew up on Dragon Ball, I can confirm it's heavily influenced by 'Journey to the West' and kung fu movies. Goku even starts out a lot like the Monkey King from the novel.
