Actually, it's a common misconception! Hot Wheels didn't buy Matchbox. Mattel, the parent company of Hot Wheels, bought Matchbox in 1997 to bring the two iconic car brands under one roof. So, technically, it was more of an adoption than a buyout.

Hot Wheels never actually bought Matchbox. The confusion might come from the fact that both brands are now owned by Mattel. Mattel acquired Matchbox in 1997, years after Hot Wheels was launched. So, while they're siblings under the Mattel umbrella, Hot Wheels didn't buy Matchbox; their parent company did.

lol nope, Hot Wheels didn't buy Matchbox. Mattel, the toy giant that owns Hot Wheels, added Matchbox to their garage in '97. So they're kinda like step-siblings in the toy car world.
