Dragon Ball Super takes place after the events of Dragon Ball Z, specifically during the ten-year gap after the defeat of Majin Buu but before the final scenes of DBZ.
Just think of it as the exciting adventures that happen in between the end of Buu saga and the end of DBZ. Simple!
It's set pretty much in that sweet spot between the end of the Majin Buu saga and the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament in Dragon Ball Z.
