Commander, one of the most beloved formats in Magic The Gathering, was officially introduced in 2011. But here's the fun fact: it actually started way back in 1996! A group of players looking for a new way to play the game came up with it, and it was known as Elder Dragon Highlander (EDH). Over time, it gained so much popularity that Wizards of the Coast decided to adopt it officially. So, while 2011 is its official birth year, its heart started beating in '96.
Actually, Commander is just an official take on EDH which has been around since '96. Wizards just made it 'official' in 2011.
