R buttons are on the right side, R1 up top and R2 just below it.

Right side of the controller, R1 is the bumper and R2 is the trigger. Easy peasy!

R on the PS4 controller usually refers to R1 or R2. R1 is the top right bumper, and R2 is the right trigger below it. Happy gaming!

As someone who’s logged hundreds of hours on my PS4, I can confirm: R1 is the upper right shoulder button, R2 is the trigger beneath that. Both are crucial for a lot of games!
