Nonmetals are huddled mostly on the right side of the periodic table in groups 14-18, with hydrogen being the lone ranger at the top left.

They're on the right, except for hydrogen, a rebellious little element on the left.

As someone who teaches chemistry, it's all about that upper right side (groups 14-18), excluding hydrogen, which is oddly on the left.
