You don't need the best reactors to enjoy the game. Focus on what you can afford and upgrade gradually. Trust me, enjoy the journey!
Head over to the Alpha Centauri system and hit up the trade outposts. I've found some top-tier reactors there for upgrading my ship!
The high-level space stations in the Andromeda system usually have the best reactors for sale. It's a bit pricey, though.
