To engage in ship combat in Starfield, start by venturing into space between planets. That's often where you'll run into hostile ships itching for a fight. Fly around different systems, and you'll surely bump into some space pirates or other threats looking for trouble!
From personal experience, cruising through higher threat level systems tends to attract more ship combat. Be prepared though, it's thrilling but can get intense!
