The Railway Rifle isn't just at Big John's Salvage. You can also snag it by completing the Railroad questline. Tinker Tom will hook you up with one as a reward. So, if puzzles aren't your thing, maybe espionage is!
You'll find the Railway Rifle in Fallout 4 at the Big John's Salvage yard. It's hidden in a locked carriage. To get the key, you need to solve a mini puzzle involving turning on the power to open up the carriage. Look around for a generator connected to a blue cable; follow it and you'll find your way!
