Actually, I just buy whatever I need from vendors. Digging through trash isn't my style, and caps are easy enough to come by if you're doing a lot of quests. Plus, no radiation poisoning!
Junk's the way to go for crystals. Cameras, microscopes, you name it. If it looks like it belongs in a science lab, grab it.
