Generators in State of Decay 2 should be installed in one of the available facility slots in your base. Just choose an empty slot, preferably one that's outdoors, and select 'Build Facility' to find the generator option.
I always put my generator in an outside slot to free up indoor space for storage and other facilities. Works like a charm!
You can install the generator in almost any open slot in your base. Outdoor slots are ideal, but make sure it's a spot you can easily access for refueling!
