Grand Theft Auto rolled onto the scene first in 1997, paving the way for urban chaos before Driver made its debut in 1999. It set the stage for open-world adventure, letting players cause mayhem across its cities before we got behind the wheel with Driver's cinematic car chases.

Driver tried to catch up, but GTA was the first to burn rubber on the open-world scene in '97. GTA not only arrived first but also revolutionized how we play and interact in virtual cityscapes. Driver came in '99, shifting gears into cinematic chase scenes, but it was GTA that laid down the first tire tracks.

GTA, no contest. Came out in 1997 and basically invented the genre. Driver showed up in 1999, playing catch-up. GTA was already out there setting standards and breaking rules.

Driver might've had the cooler car chases initially, but GTA was the one who started the party in 1997. By the time Driver arrived in 1999, GTA had already established a legacy of open-world mischief and storytelling that others could only aspire to follow.
