Start with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It's more faithful to the manga and has a more cohesive storyline. Trust me, you won't regret it!
Definitely go for the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist first. It gives a unique perspective and makes watching Brotherhood even more rewarding later.
From my experience, start with Brotherhood. As a die-hard fan, the plot is tighter and the animation is slicker.
