Honestly, just collect what makes you happy. I started with just picking cards I thought looked cool or featured my favorite Pokemon. Ended up with a pretty unique and personal collection that I love more than any of my 'valuable' cards.
Just go for the shiny ones. Nothing beats the thrill of pulling a holographic card from a new pack.
