The Pokemon card trend was started by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori, who created the Pokemon franchise. The trading card game itself was developed by Creatures Inc. and first published by Nintendo and Wizards of the Coast in 1996. It was this release that kickstarted the global phenomenon of collecting and battling with Pokemon cards.
